ACADEMIC PROGRAM
In response to the need for professional training in film in all its areas of concern, the degree program entitled Bachelor of Arts in Communication, Major in Film and Audio-Visual Communication was instituted in 1984 by the U.P. College of Mass Communication (then called IMC). The program consists of theoretical and practical courses covering areas of planning and management, research, production, writing, performance, cinematography, directing, editing, processing, production design, criticism and evaluation to mold students to be equipped and versatile in the field.
UPFI’s curriculum is designed to encompass all aspects of film – history, applications, technology, discourses, production, creative processes, and special topics, with each course carefully plotted, each syllabus backed up by comprehensive research, and all materials and supplements thoroughly selected.
The program curriculum has constantly been revisited and updated concomitant to emerging trends, technological development and innovative progress in this constantly evolving discipline. In fact, two years after the program’s conception, there were already changes in course titles and additions of unit requirements to include research and thesis courses.
Also in 2002, a graduate degree program, Master of Arts in Media Studies (Film) was launched to promote further education in film studies and to focus on higher levels of intellectual discourse needed in the field.
